12 Days of Pork Giveaway! Day 1: How Do You Cook Bacon?

by Susan on December 13, 2012

bacon-press1As I began writing this post, I Googled “how to cook bacon” and got 53, 300,000 results. I stuck to the ones on the first page. But even those dozen or so posts had numerous “best” ways to cook bacon: Cook it in a skillet on the stovetop. Make that a grill pan. Bake it in the oven. Microwave it on a plate. Microwave it on a vertical bacon rack. Make it crispy. Don’t make it too crispy. Burn it, baby. Flatten the bacon. No! Let the bacon curl up.

How can something as basic as bacon be this involved?

Me? I cook bacon — actually my husband cooks bacon, whom I happily admit is better at it than I am — on the stovetop in a skillet over low heat so it cooks slowly and evenly and gets crispy all over. Since he likes his bacon flat and crispy, I’m surprising him with a bacon press which is the best way to achieve restaurant-style flat, crispy bacon. Just don’t tell him. I want him to believe it’s from Santa Claus.

And for the next 12 days, PKS.com is going to be Santa’s helper. Today we’re launching our first ever 12 Days of Pork Giveaway!

Each day for the next 12 days, we will highlight a new item here on PKS.com that we’re giving away as part of a grand pork holiday gift pack. (One winner will be selected at the end of our sweepstakes to win the ENTIRE collection of all 12 prizes!)

There are two ways to enter:

1. Pin the image highlighted in this post on Pinterest.

2. Retweet the #12DaysofPork tweet from @allaboutpork on Twitter to enter to win the entire gift pack.

This means you have two chances to enter per post (if you pin AND retweet). We’ll publish a new post each day, giving you a new chance to earn two more entries. You do NOT have to enter each day – it just increases your number of entries if you do.

See full legal rules here.

What item will we unveil next? The bacon press is just the first of many other pork-inspired gift items that we have coming your way. Check back tomorrow for the second 12 Days of Pork Holiday item, and thanks for playing!

I have a vertical microwave bacon holder. It always works great. And i immediately pour the bacon grease into a container to later be put out for the birds in winter.

I start off with a Stainless Steel Rod and Wrap my Bacon around the tube the coat it with Brown sugar place the tubes on a sheet tray in a covection oven at 350 degrees for 15-20 Mins. After they are out of the oven let cool for 20 Mins and slide off the Stainless steel rod. Serve cool with a honey mustard dill sauce. Amazing …….. That’s all I have to say about that ..

Sharon Ward 12.15.12 at 1:12 am

Pork has been my favorite meat in many forms (roast pork, pork chops, ribs, ham, bacon, etc.) since childhood, except for one brief period when my parents won a baby pig at a party, we raised him for a while until he got too big; and when I learned they had sent him to a farm to eventually be turned into bacon, my heart was broken and I wouldn’t eat anything pork for a while in honor of “Porky.” Back to today, I’m a senior citizen now, and you chose two methods for entering the contest that I’ve never used before. I can do a lot of other computer things, but not those. So, would it be possible for you to enter me with this note? Sure would appreciate it, ’cause I could use this win.

Would very much love to have the Bacon Press. I eat alot of pork. Not a beef eater. I usually cut my bacon at the top to make it lie down while I am cooking it.
