bacon vodka?

Have you heard of bacon vodka? Have you ever wanted to try such a thing?

Called BAKON, this potato vodka is making the rounds of bloggers and tv personalities both. The makers of BAKON claim:

“Bakon Vodka is a superior quality potato vodka with a savory bacon flavor. It’s clean, crisp, and delicious. This is the only vodka you’ll ever want to use to make a Bloody Mary, and it’s a complementary element of both sweet and savory drinks.”

Hm. It’s an interesting twist. And of course, since we are fans of (nearly) all things bacon, we’re intrigued.

Conan O’Brien had his sidekick, the fabulous Andy Richter, try some BAKON on tv. Take a look.

That seems pretty decisive. However, he did finish the bottle by the end of the show…

So we want to know. Has anyone tried the bacon vodka yet? What did you think? And how would you drink it, besides late at night, alone?

  1. Aha, so they’ve finally commercially marketed this stuff. It’s been kind of an underground thing to make your own for a while now, I think. My boyfriend tried it a few months ago and the flavor was really intriguing – it was a very simple process of frying bacon, steeping in vodka for a couple weeks, chilling to solidify the fats, and then straining through a coffee filter (I imagine cheesecloth would work as well). The taste was nice and smoky; a little bit salty. It’s pretty good straight, chilled, and I hear GREAT things about bloody mary’s using it as a base, but have yet to attempt mixing one.

  2. My sweet husband made his own bacon vodka as well, but it only took a few hours before he strained it and it was ready to use (found the video recipe on YouTube). It was the hit of our last BBQ. I snuck into the kitchen at one point and blended up a pitcher of the bacon vodka with a generous dose of irish cream liqueur and ice and it was outrageously good. We called it a Bacon Frappe.

When used subtly, the flavor of bacon blends well with both sweet and savory. (think french toast & bacon sandwich). Can’t have too much bacon.
